A night in Bangkok? Check into the so called “best hotel in the world”.
An exclusive list of just fifty elite accommodations compiled by a well-known organization has been announced – and Capella Bangkok, “a calming riverside oasis” in the heart of the “cacophonous” Thai capital has been ranked number one.
The World’s 50 Best Hotels, compiled by the same organization responsible for the World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards each year, is a collection of wildly attractive — and often shocking — inns from every corner of the globe, including two in NYC .
Bangkok’s long-standing reputation for hotel hospitality appears to be in safe hands at the 101-room Capella, opening in 2020. All rooms face the property’s Chao Phraya River, which reviewers said “oozes the elegance of a grand dame” while offering “the intimacy of a boutique hotel”.
According to the organization, voting is conducted by 600 people sitting anonymously on regional panels of hoteliers, travel journalists and experienced luxury travelers. Votes are based on attitudes within a previous 18-month voting period. Voting is confidential until the announcement of the list.
“It gives us great pleasure to share the World’s 50 Best Hotels 2024 list and celebrate Capella Bangkok’s ranking as No. 1,” Emma Sleight, Chief Content Officer for the 50 Best Hotels in the World, said in a written statement. World.
“This year’s dynamic list underlines the appetite for a range of experiences, from busy city breaks to remote escapes, and honors the dedication and passion of the staff who make these extraordinary experiences possible, while highlighting the incredible breadth of talent at industry around the world,” said Sleight.
Rates at Capella Bangkok start at $600 per night, the organization said.
New York was pushed into the lower reaches of the list by such dazzling spots as the “luxurious” Passalacqua on Italy’s Lake Como (No. 2), housed in an “18th-century villa whose former premises housed Pope Innocent X”.
The highest the Big Apple could manage was No. 30, a designated spot for the storied Upper East Side Carlyle, which reviewers called “an enduring symbol of elegance and sophistication in a distinctive city.”
On 57th Street, austere Aman — famous locally for the cast of characters involved in its development and a $135 million residential-side penthouse that was the city’s most expensive property sold in 2023 — landed the no. . 37.
Residing in the Beaux-Arts Crown Building, the “silent eye” wowed reviewers with its “understated luxury.”
